When Pain is a Placebo

The desire to ‘work out’ physical tension through high intensity pressure might seem understandable, but it may not create a better, more effective and lasting outcome.

Harder pressure stimulates the nervous system, bringing attention to the site of strain. Engaging this tension directly and with prejudice can provide cathartic feelings of relief. In addition, after a small period of time the body may reward your experience of pain with endorphins (natural pain-killers). It is suitable for young people, tradies and athletes.

However it is harder on therapist’s bodies and creates a ‘guarding’ reaction from the client that can increase tension throughout the body system. Remedial therapy seeks to unlock and release tension, equalising the resistance between soft tissues on both sides of the body.
